Detail & Description
Cancún, on the Yucatán Peninsula, is one of the world's leading tourist destinations. Its extraordinary beaches, with white sand and crystalline waters, are the main attraction. But additionally, there are impressive natural spaces and spectacular Mayan ruins nearby that will amaze you.
In the midst of this paradise you'll find the Hotel Riu Cancun, Hotel Riu Caribe, Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas and Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula, where you can enjoy a holiday with the most exclusive amenities. And, thanks to their prime location, you'll have easy access to the most interesting places in Cancún, like Boulevard Kukulkán, where you can practise countless aquatic sports.
Mexico's Mayan past
If you want to get to know one of the main attractions of the Yucatán, you have to go into its Mayan past. You can visit the Museo Maya de Cancún to learn about the main characteristics of this ancient civilisation, where you'll find out about curiosities like their interpretation of the end of the world and their extraordinary calendar. We also recommend you take excursions to Tulum and Chichén Itzá, the two most important Mayan archaeological sites. In Tulum, you'll get to explore the ruins of the ancient city and the indigenous village that still maintains its traditions. In Chichén Itzá, you'll learn the importance of the ancient Mayan capital, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In the latter, you'll discover the Pyramid of Kukulcan, the Temple of the Warriors, the astronomical observatory and the Mayan ball court, in addition other minor temples.
And aquatic world to be discovered
Isla Mujeres is the other area you shouldn't miss during your trip to Cancún. It's the perfect place for scuba diving, not only for the transparency of its waters, exuberant vegetation, coral and brightly coloured fish but also because it's the site of the Museo Subacuático de Arte, the only underwater art museum in the world. If aquatic sports don't interest you, Isla Mujeres is also an interesting destination for people who want to sail in a catamaran and visit the charming fishing village located there. In addition to all these leisure options, in Cancún you'll also find water parks, the famous Xcaret eco-archaeological park and the Mariposario butterfly pavilion.
Gastronomy in Cancún
In Cancún you'll enjoy a cuisine rich in meat and fish with indigenous influences. The typical dishes of the region include cochinita pibil, marinated roast pork; Tikinxic, Mayan-style barbecued fish; and shrimp curry, another local speciality. And, you'll also be able to savour the most delectable tropical fruits and typical sweets which won't leave you indifferent.
